My view on the issue/blogging in general
Before I was presented with this topic I had a very minimal knowledge as well as appeal towards this topic. Yet as I researched more I realized that not only is this a growing issue but its one that can really affect anyone. In most cases (where there isn't a motive) journalists as well as citizens are victimized. Although this growing problem hasn't seemed to pose too much of an immediate alarming threat to US citizens on US soil, whose to say that if this problem isn't addressed soon it wont spread to countries around us eventually leaking into the US.
The idea of intolerance towards journalists to me is wrong plain and simple. Why attack people that are only trying to protect citizens and help provide them with the information necessary to be free and self-governing?
As I kept researching this Global issue became more and more interesting to me, one in which I might stick with and keep learning more about into the future.
I am also finding that the more I blog the more I like it. Its a great opportunity to not only expand on my knowledge on certain topics but it also gives me a chance to get opinions off my chest in a public forum. Basically utilizing my right to have a voice. I believe this project has helped open my eyes to the possibility of becoming a journalist.

"In the line of fire."
Several examples of journalists being killed (intentionally as well as "unintentionally") have arose on the internet throughout recent history. Websites like Wikileaks.com have attributed to the uncovering of such videos.
This video seen above was obtained and decrypted by Wikileaks. This video previously was not released to the public. This took place in 2007 at a public square in Eastern Baghdad. Those killed during this supposed "unintentional" attack included Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeenm, his driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others. Apparently they are assumed as insurgents when after the initial shooting they arrive on scene and attempt to transport the wounded. The official US military statement claimed the pilots did not know how the deaths occurred. This footage was released to the public thanks to Wikileaks in 2010 and can be found at http://www.collateralmurder.com/
This video seen above is footage being shot by Fadel Shana, a Reuter journalist, who was killed in the line of duty while covering the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. He was filming along the Israeli boarder when despite clear markings that portrayed him as a journalist he was fired upon and killed instantly by a tank shown in the near distance. There were also 16 other Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers during this attack.
Above is just two small yet still important documents in the realm of journalism related killings. CPJ the leading source in the advocacy of protecting journalists worldwide has a well documented report of every journalist killed since 1992. It goes into whether their death was due to crossfire or if their was a murder behind their death, classifying it as murder. For a full list you can visit http://www.cpj.org/killed/2013/
Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
A recent study has been conducted
by the CPJ or the Committee to Protect Journalists illuminating the apparent
fact that Journalists world-wide seem to be loosing more of their freedoms
everyday. According to CPJ a
journalist has been shot and killed in the line of duty once every 8 days over the
course of the past two decades.
Including 232 journalists behind bars coupled with seventy
journalists loosing their lives in 2012.
This all equates to a 43 percent increase from 2011.
CPJ recently came out with a
“risk list” or a list of ten countries that experienced the highest “downward
trends” during 2012. Such
countries include Pakistan, Somalia, Brazil, Ecuador, Turkey, Syria, Russia,
Ethiopia, Vietnam and Iran.
An example
expressing the harsh reality that in certain countries journalists should
constantly be looking over their shoulder came about in Russia. In December of 2012 two "members
of the bandit underground" shot and killed Russian reporter Kazbek
Gekkiyev on accusations of "one-sided reporting."
According to
the state newspaper, Rossiiskaya Gazeta, Gekkiyev was walking down the street
with a friend when two men walked up to him and asked for his name.
Seconds after the reporter gave his name he was shot in the head three
times.
CPJ states
that Gekkiyev was the seventh journalist to be killed due to their occupation in
the past decade in the North Caucasus region, which makes it the most dangerous
place in Russia for the press.
Wouldent one
think that the rise in journalists being threatened around the world spark some
sort of a resolution among nation leaders?
The CPJ brings up a solid point. CPJ
has been the strongest advocator or a proposed UN resolution. In order to gaurentee safe journalism
the UN proposes that no journalist can be touched in a conflict zone. Backing
this idea up is article 19 of the 1948 “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,”
which includes the right to “impart information and ideas through any media and
regardless of frontiers,” which supposedly makes freedom of the press and
global right. The advocacy of this "freedom" is still ongoing.

I chose number 16 titled "Journalism under attack around the world." I chose this topic for a couple of different reasons. First being I figured this is appropriate being that this is a journalism class. And secondly I would like to expand my knowledge on this topic because it grabbed my attention more so than any of the other options. http://www.projectcensored.org/16-journalism-attack-around-globe/
